My name is_____. I am proud to share I am a cancer survivor who fought and won three battles with cancer during my 30s. My experience with cancer meant that my life saving treatment had a direct effect on my ability to become a biological mother.

I am writing to express strong support for Senate Bill 1347 and urge the Arizona House of Representatives to advance this important bill.

A lesser known but deeply impactful reality is that many medically necessary treatments for young adults diagnosed with cancer carry a high likelihood of an irreversible side effect: infertility. Treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery often threaten reproductive potential. Prior to beginning these treatments, patients may have a narrow window to preserve their fertility — but the cost of fertility preservation services is prohibitively expensive and frequently not covered by health insurance.

SB 1347, sponsored by Senator Werner, would require health insurers in Arizona to cover standard fertility preservation services for individuals of reproductive age who are diagnosed with cancer whose medically necessary treatment may directly or indirectly cause infertility. This measure passed the Senate Finance Committee in Mid-February, the Senate Floor at the beginning of March, and the Health and Human Services Committee, unanimously, on March 16. The bill aligns coverage requirements with established medical guidelines from leading professional organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. It also ensures coverage without unnecessary barriers such as preauthorization and includes reasonable provisions regarding cost-sharing and religious exemptions.

Currently, many Arizonans face the devastating reality of having to choose between timely, life-saving cancer treatment and the future possibility of building a family. Fertility preservation in this context is not elective or experimental — it is an essential component of comprehensive cancer care for patients who wish to preserve their reproductive options.

I am proud to support SB 1347 and respectfully urge you to help move this bill forward and vote YES when it comes before you. Arizona can ensure that a cancer diagnosis does not permanently take away a person's chance to have children simply because of where they live or what type of insurance they carry.
